Summer’s finally here, and we’re itching to spend as much time as possible soaking in the rays. Safely, of course. And that goes double for baby. Experts say you should invest in new sunscreen every summer, and with all the great options out there, there’s just no excuse not to go natural. Before you take that gorgeous belly–or that itty bitty baby–out there, stock up on one of our top picks in our annual list of natural sunscreens for baby, whether she’s on the inside or out.

1. Baby Hampton Beach Bum Sunscreen, SPF 30, Fragrance Free
One local NY momma took matters into her own hands when searching for a natural sunscreen for her own kids. Founder Kristen Peterson and her family live at the beach, so it’s safe to say that she has put this formula to the test. $22. Buy it here.

2. COOLA Mineral Baby Moisturizer Suncare, SPF 50, Unscented
This baby-specific formulation is 100% natural, relying on ingredients like organic sunflower and sesame seed oils for SPF protection. The organic shea and cocoa butter, blended with organic avocado, olive and coconut oils, will keep baby’s skin as soft as it is sun-safe. $34. Buy it here.

3. California Baby Summer Blend Broad Spectrum SPF 30+ Sunscreen
The light, refreshing lemon scent to this sun block almost makes us forget just how much we miss the smell of good old Coppertone. The mineral-based formula means it’s not only super safe for both you and baby, it also helps to soothe bug bites and hydrate parched summer skin. $19.99. Buy it here.

4. Babyganics Mineral-Based Sunscreen, SPF 50+, Fragrance Free
This super-affordable brand has quickly become our go-to for baby safe products around our homes. But it’s also our go-to for babysafe sunscreen in our diaper bags because it lathers on smoothly, absorbs quickly and actually works. $11.99. Buy it here.

5. Alba Botanica Very Emollient Fragrance Free Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30-4 oz
This lightweight sunscreen is paraben- and fragrance-free, making it the perfect moisturizing base for your daily routine. Buy it here.

6. Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30+, Baby, SPF 30+
Blue Lizard’s pediatrician-recommended baby formula is free of chemicals, parabens and fragrances. But it’s the company’s patented BPA-free 8.75 oz Smart Bottle™ that won us over–it actually turns pink in the presence of harmful UV rays, and gets deeper in color as more UV rays are present. $24.50. Buy it here.

7. Beautycounter Protect All Over Sunscreen SPF 30
We love a company that not only keeps us protected, but also keeps our hunger for beauty products satisfied. Beautycounter’s Broad Spectrum SPF is made with soothing elements like green tea and geranium, and without the bad stuff. $26. Buy it here.

  1. Great picks! We use Honest Co. and Blue Lizard and have found them both to be effective, although I don’t put sunscreen on all the time.

  2. I was wondering what the difference is between Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredient and zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Is there one that you’d recommend over the other, or is there no difference? Thank you!

    1. That’s a great question, Joan. We’ll try to get the answer for you!

    2. Hi again Joan! Our friend Dr. Amy at Baby Pibu gave us this helpful info:
Both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are minerals that physically block UVA and UVB rays. The difference between them is how well they block the rays at different percentages. For the best protection, look for a sunscreen that contains both. That way you are benefiting from both of them.
Here’s a study that talks about it more specifically:
