Best Natural Sunscreens for Baby

8 natural sunscreens you’ll feel safe slathering on your baby.

Best Baby Sunscreens

Summer’s finally here, and we’re itching to spend as much time as possible soaking in the rays. Safely, of course. And that goes double for baby. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you should try to keep babies under 6 months out of the sun, but if they are exposed, make sure to use sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. For babies older than 6 months, they say, lather, lather, lather.

Experts also say you should invest in new sunscreen every summer, and with all the great options out there, there’s just no excuse not to go natural. Before you take that that itty bitty baby out, stock up on one of our top picks in our annual list of natural sunscreens for baby.

1. Supergoop! Super Power Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50.
One of our least favorite parts about sunscreen is the rubbing in part. Right? Supergoop!’s new mousse consistency is light as air and quick-absorbing, but still offers SPF 50 protection and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Buy it here.

2. thinkbaby Safe Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+
When it comes to safe sunscreens, thinkbaby takes, well, the thinking out of the equation. It’s not only been rated 1 (that’s the best!) by EWG since 2010, but it’s also the first sunscreen to pass Whole Foods Premium Care Requirements. There’s no Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, or UV Chemical absorbers and it’s got the highest level of SPF protection and water resistance you can get. Buy it here.

3. The Honest Company Sunscreen Spray.
Since you’re probably already shopping with Honest on the weekly, throw some sunscreen into your basket too! We love the pure, hypoallergenic, mineral-based formulation, and you can’t beat the non-greasy spray application for a wiggly baby. Buy it here.

4. babo botanicals SPF 30 Clear Zinc Sunscreen Lotion

Don’t get fooled by the sweet (and USDA Certified Organic) ingredients in Badger’s baby sunscreen; it’s as protective as they come. It contains non-nano Zinc Oxide to protect from both UVA & UVB rays, it’s water & sweat resistant for 40 minutes and there’s no need to wait before sunning — it works immediately upon application. Buy it here.

  1. Great picks! We use Honest Co. and Blue Lizard and have found them both to be effective, although I don’t put sunscreen on all the time.

  2. I was wondering what the difference is between Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredient and zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Is there one that you’d recommend over the other, or is there no difference? Thank you!

    1. That’s a great question, Joan. We’ll try to get the answer for you!

    2. Hi again Joan! Our friend Dr. Amy at Baby Pibu gave us this helpful info:
Both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are minerals that physically block UVA and UVB rays. The difference between them is how well they block the rays at different percentages. For the best protection, look for a sunscreen that contains both. That way you are benefiting from both of them.
Here’s a study that talks about it more specifically:
