There is something truly satisfying about finding the perfect vintage piece. But we also understand that digging may not be for everyone…as does PinkClouds founder Jennifer Collins, who happens to be due with her baby this winter. “Vintage can often be time consuming and intimidating. PinkClouds’ mission is to provide an edited selection of restored and repaired vintage pieces styled with modern designers,” she says.
Collins recently opened up her first brick and mortar in SoHo. So while drooling over her online shop at your desks may have been your favorite past-time, New Yorkers now have the dangerous pleasure of also having a place to try on her gorgeous garbs. Even with a belly! While PinkClouds doesn’t carry “maternity” Collins says, “we have a lot of great options for alternative fashion which double as maternity wear.” Bingo.
Here Collins tells us exactly how she’s been accommodating her growing belly.
Tell us about your pre-pregnancy style.
My style is always changing, but in general I prefer a mix between classic staples and vintage pieces. I love mixing leggings and oversized vintage blouses and this definitely helped me transition to my pregnant style. I even managed to continue to squeeze into a pair of The Row leather leggings with an elastic waist! That was a good day!
Has it changed since becoming pregnant?
There is clearly a lot you cannot wear while pregnant. Each month the selection of my existing wardrobe dwindles, but on the upside, there’s less to choose from making it easier in the morning! I have been wearing a lot of trapeze-style dresses, stretch cotton tanks and cotton American Apparel dresses as layering pieces.
Has the way you buy for PinkClouds changed now that you have pregnancy on your mind?
I have definitely had my eye out for more forgiving silhouettes, empire waist designs, and belly-friendly looks while vintage buying. It is a fun new challenge!
What have been your maternity essentials?
I have been living in my J.Crew maternity Minnie Pants. I have them in all three colors and they are in constant rotation throughout the week. As much as I loved a maxi dress in the beginning when my bump was still small, now that I am further along it feels better to be in pants. I feel more pregnant and less “big all over”.
What have been your splurge pieces?
I splurged on a few great vintage cocktail dresses that are belly-friendly, including one Estevez dress that I plan on wearing to my baby shower!
What style tips would you give preggers?
As soon as you start outgrowing your closet, it is time to clean it out. Store away all the mini dresses, pants, skirts and tops that will NOT fit you for the next nine months. An edited closet lessens the stress of dressing while pregnant. It also enables you to have fun with your clothes again! It is a good time for Spring Cleaning!
Heels or flats with a belly?
I say both! Most days I wear flats, riding boots or sneakers. But a night out in a pair of heels is something I enjoy belly or no belly.
