How would you describe your pregnant style?
Comfortable! Casual and functional. I know it is probably so passé but I just love pants and leggings that come up over my belly. I find them so warm and comforting. As a creative arts therapist you move around a lot so most of my clothing is roomy or stretchy and I’ve been able to mostly continue wearing my pre-maternity tops. I’ve also invested in quite a few pieces that are for maternity and nursing so I’ll be able to continue wearing them well after our little guy is born.
Have you had any challenges learning to dress your pregnant body?
Oh my goodness yes! Is there any pregnant lady who doesn’t? I want to meet her! I think the hardest part is keeping up with how quickly my body has changed after week 29 and trying to figure out what will be comfortable. Being pregnant as the weather gets colder has also been a challenge. It’s very hard to plan ahead because I have no idea if the things I’ve bought for winter will fit in the coming months. I keep asking myself how big will I get?! Oddly enough, one of the hardest things has been shoes! I’m 6 feet tall so I already have big feet and shoe challenges. I’m still trying to find winter shoes/boots that are comfortable and that I can get on. Bending over is getting tough!
So far, what has surprised you most during your pregnancy?
I think the most surprising thing for me is how easy and smooth it’s been. I say that knowing how lucky or blessed I am to be loving pregnancy. I’m in the “advanced maternal age“ bracket so going into it I was worried it was going to be really rough. I think there is definitely something about being a New Yorker that has helped. All the walking I do, the energy of the city, and this weird phenomenon where everyone is so nice and sends love your way. Complete strangers are happy for you, women you meet on the street envelop you with stories of pregnancy, birth and motherhood. It’s amazing. I’m realizing pregnancy puts you and those around you so in touch with the miracle that our existence is and really allows us to tap into some deeper feelings of joy and awe. It’s such a wonderful feeling especially with all that is going on in the world right now.
What’s been your favorite pregnancy piece or brand to show off your bump?
I have a jumpsuit by Envie de Frasies that I was rocking before it got too cold. I LOVE it. It’s like a sassy onesie! Now that I’m farther along I am loving my H&M chinos with basically any tight top which is really funny because I’m totally not a chinos person or someone who wears tight clothing. I’ve never owned chinos before and probably never will again. I just feel really cute and mom like in them. I’m surprised how much I’ve liked my H&M purchases. Everything has been super comfortable and they have maternity wear that is part of their Conscious Line so you can get organic cotton pieces. I’m loving JoJo Maman Bébé for those nursing/maternity items. Madeleine Maternity is my go to for basic comfortable dresses.
What NYC experience are you most looking forward to sharing with your baby?
I think I’m most excited about sharing life in the city in general. When I think about him growing up in Brooklyn I get so excited because the world is at his fingertips here. I like imagining what his interests will be. Something creative like music or dance or design? Will he be an academic or into technology or science? I’m sure he will be really into something I’ve never thought of and I love that no matter what his interests are there will be a community for him to explore. I’m just so excited that as he grows he’ll really be able to explore himself through all that is available here. I’m also really excited for him to be a part of Sunday Funday, you know when you meet your friends for brunch (I love brunch) and then meander around your neighborhood stopping at the park or the flea or your favorite cocktail bar. That’s going to be so fun!!
