When I became pregnant the first time around, I was completely clueless when it came to putting together a baby registry. I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices and confused trying to figure out exactly what I needed. It wasn’t until I actually had my baby that I better understood what products were helpful and which products were totally unnecessary — and in some cases even dangerous. In my five years of doing this parenting thing, I’ve found some great brands and products that are not only useful and safe, but also environmentally friendly. Add these 8 great picks to your baby registry, and you’ll be sure you get shower gifts both you and your little one will love.
1. Burts Bees Bodysuits
I love the soft bodysuits from Burts Bees, and as a bonus, these 100% cotton onesies are also organic. This should be a staple on your registry -- your baby will live in bodysuits through the first 6 months.
2. Glass and BPA-Free Bottles
For bottles, I love the Born Free BPA-free glass bottles from the Eco Deco line. They’re BPA-free and PVC-free and also encourage a natural milk flow. I also like the colorful bottles from Lifefactory that are made with thermal shock resistant glass and silicone sleeves (they’re also BPA-free and phthalate-free).
3. Ergobaby Organic Carrier
Carriers are a must-have for life on-the-go with a baby in NYC. My favorite was the Organic Carrier from Ergobaby that is made from 100% Oeko-Tex certified organic cotton and designed for newborns through age 3. This carrier allows you to wear baby or toddler on your hip, front and back in a natural and comfortably seated position. And thanks to its cushy padded shoulder straps and padded waistband that evenly distributes weight between your hips and shoulders, it didn’t put pressure on my back.
4. California Baby Shampoo and Bodywash
For baby’s first bath, I recommend the all natural body wash from California Baby. This light and gentle product has no sulfates, fragrances or scent masking agents, making it super-gentle for babies. Containing natural vegetable cleaners, this shampoo and wash is great to clean the body, face and hair without stripping or irritating the skin.
5. aden + anais Organic Sleeping Bags
aden + anais are renowned for their beautiful and soft muslin blankets. The brand’s new organic cute sleeping bags are great for any green baby shower. Made from organic cotton muslin and featuring beautiful prints, these sleeping bags are breathable and loose, making them ideal for easy nighttime changes.
7. Organic Mattress
Part of taking care of baby is taking care of mama-to-be. I suggest buying an organic mattress to avoid carcinogens, pesticides and chemical flame retardants that are found in conventional mattresses. When it comes to crib mattresses, I love Naturepedic, which are made with organic cotton and have an anti-dust mite and bed bug barrier.
8. Eco Friendly Toys
